I liked this episode a lot, but one thing I was never able to understand was why Homer wearing a Rastafarian hat (and thereby associating himself with Reggae music, according to Lisa) was considered offensive to the other attendees of Hullapalooza. Can anyone explain? Thanks.

They call him a “narc”, or a police spy – that’s why they throw him out.
This episode always annoyed me – Lisa is 8 years old and likes jazz music, why would she want to go to Hullabalooza? It feels like an early attempt by the writers to make Bart and Lisa act out “teenage” story lines.

I always assumed it was because Homer was a white guy trying to act cool wearing a Rastafarian hat, which led to the concert-goers suspecting he was a police narc trying (but failing) to blend in.

“Homerpalooza”, like many Season 7 episodes, set a precedent for later episodes. This is the first episode where Homer suffers from cartoon invulnerability, while at the same time he attempts to be “cool” and a succesful, popular person. With guest stars crammed in. The key difference between “Homerpalooza” and later Homer-centric episodes, though, and the reason why this is still a real Simpsons episode without Zombie issues, is that here: a) Homer finds out he’s good at something by accident, and the only thing he does is do basically nothing (he just stands still while a cannon is fired), similar to how Bart became famous with his “I didn’t do it”, and b) there’s no drama involved. But I think the idea behind this episode wouldn’t have been developed just a mere year before, and if they did, they would have put (a little) more care.

@ Dan: Lisa being a fan of jazz has always annoyed me. It even added to the absolute lame-ness of her character. Why would an 8-year old be a fan of jazz anyway? I feel her smart 8-year old girl character would be a fan of classical music. But I guess they needed an excuse to have her play her fart horn.

@ Joe H: Thanks. That would indeed seem more likely.

The jazz thing was more of a vestige of the late-80s in which “Moaning Lisa” was first written. Though I agree that general golden age Lisa would have been more attracted to long-hair music.

She has listened to non jazz stuff in earlier episodes too. In Sideshow Bob Roberts when she was driving the car she was listening to the St. Elmo’s Fire theme.

This is the episode where they show us that every shit can pass for a decent rock band nowadays. Rock music died in 1990, anything that came afterwards is in the post-rock era. You want something new? Shove a guitar up your asshole and play it with your sphincter. That should do it.

I tried that. I just got an infection. It was still better than anything One Direction has done.

Rarely though, some decency does emerge. Like Arctic Monkeys. Nowhere near Pink Floyd, but that’s not the point.
